Next Hike

Last week and as you can see from the photo below we had a near perfect day for hiking. It was not difficult to decide on a suitable hike and the choice of doing a very recently completed route on the south slopes of Mt. Davies was popular with those who had done it before.  It starts and finishes on parts of a couple of our old trails that meander through the forest on the upper slopes of Mt. Davies, but in between it follows a winding route that drops quite steeply down and visits three small bluffs, the Uno2trois Bluffs, that offer the most spectacular views out to the west to the long range of mountains on Vancouver Island in the far distance.  That low island in front of the mountains on the left in the picture is Hornby.

Next Hike

The next hike will be on Saturday, 26th October.

We meet at the Ballpark in Gillies Bay at 10:00am.

Last week we met in Van Anda and drove part way along Blubber Bay Road and parked on the right at the start of the Eagle Cove Trail.  It was quite wet all morning with steady rain and of course on the narrow sections of the winding trail the vegetation made sure we were pretty damp from head to toe!  However, just about the time we reached the seaside lunch spot the rain eased off and the rest of the time we were hiking was much more pleasant. The route back to the vehicles followed the coastline quite closely and we were on part of the Marble Bay Trail where it runs along the north shore of Sturt Bay. It twists and turns a lot and is a bit tricky in places, but the frequent glimpses of the houses in Van Anda and the boats in the marina are interesting.  In the photo this week the view is looking south across the entrance to Sturt Bay and the Government Dock is near the houses on the left with the school hidden behind the cluster of taller trees in the centre.

Next Hike from Van Anda again.

The next hike will be on Saturday, 19th October.

We meet at the Canadian Legion parking in Van Anda at 10:00am.

I was not able to join the Trekkers on the hike last week as a small group of botanists visiting from Vancouver Island needed my help with getting to areas where they might find a great variety of fungi. During the two days they spent in the field they had great success and were well pleased with their collected specimens. I understand the hikers enjoyed their hike which took them south along the main trail from the cabins at Woodwardia then down to the coast at little Cabin Cove.  Then for the return north they used the trail up and over the low forested bluffs with a side trip out to Favada Point along the way.  Thanks James for being such a useful host and helping them navigate the section of trail that was tricky.

Last week we had quite a nice day for hiking and drove along Bell Road to the first hydro junction where there are so many more signs than there used to be, and turned off onto the Masck Farm road then headed north until the first turning on the left then parking just up the hill past the farmhouse site.   Our destination for lunch was the tranquil Loon Lake.

On the coming Saturday 12th we will have an opportunity to visit Woodwardia Nature Reserve where there is a three day symposium of botanists who are fungus experts. They are visiting Texada over the long weekend in search of some less common species of mushrooms that prefer to grow in areas of limestone bedrock.  James Mack, owner of Woodwardia, has invited the Trekkers to visit his house in Maple Bay after the hike to meet up with the fungus hunters.

My photo this week is a recent one of an insect that has been eating the leaves of our Alder trees all over the place.  It's called the Alder Flea Beatle and if you poke them you will see how they got that name, they can jump quite a distance.
