We meet at the Ballpark in Gillies Bay at 10:00am
Last week our hike day came before the current spell of very cold weather had arrived although it was certainly cool and rather cloudy. We set off for the high ground as there was a good chance of getting to a viewpoint looking east towards the mainland mountains. The starting point was to be the gravel pit part way down the Hydro East Rd so we took the left fork at Bell Farm and it came as a big surprise when we approached the highest part of the road to find the road and surroundings covered in a thin blanket of snow. Luckily it was not enough to worry about and we reached the planned parking place with no snow in sight.
Hiking an uphill route this time we found we quickly warmed up with the exercise and eventually found a viewpoint for lunch on the Vancouver Island Hydro line right of way just about at the snowline. My photo shows the view as we crossed under the wires on the way up with the forested high ground to the south covered in snow.
