Next Hike

The next hike will be on Saturday, 9th February.

We meet at the Ballpark in Gillies Bay at 10:00am.

Last week we had just perfect weather for hiking and decided to risk running into snow on the high level roads south of Angel Lake, but were surprised to find no trace of snow to be seen anywhere even in the most shaded places where snow usually lingers. Parking at Fiveway Junction we headed off down the road to Cook Bay in search of some bluffs I remembered visited with the Trekkers many years ago.  I recall it was in the fall and the area of forest on the route up to the bluffs yielded more of the choice Pine Mushroom than anyone had ever seen before.  This time in mid winter we did not expect edible treasure, but the fantastic view when we finally located the best viewpoint was reward enough for the effort. My photo shows us looking down to the forest that extends to the west of Cook Bay with the Sabine Channel beyond and that's the north-west end of Lasqueti  Island at the top of the picture.  

Please be aware that this Saturday there will almost certainly be ice and snow on the ground at all elevations right down to sea level and conditions for hiking could be quite risky.
